Evgeni Koroliov  piano

A thrilling performance of Bach by Koroliov, long hailed as the stylistic heir to Glenn Gould and Richter

Bach  The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I
12 preludes and fugues BWV 846-869
The Art of Fugue  BWV 1080 : Contrapunctus 1 & 4, Canon alla Decima, Contrapuncto alla terza, Contrapunctus 9

Evgeni Koroliov is an unchallenged master, who is sought out as a teacher in Hamburg by the rising stars of the piano world, but he is also first and foremost a pianist with a wide repertoire, formidable intelligence and a prestigious keyboard technique nurtured in Moscow. Although he is passionate about Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy, he is most commonly associated with Bach. He makes the most intricate fugues sound intelligible and sails through preludes with serene calm, revealing with simplicity the immense architectures whose human dimension he never overlooks. Beneath an austere exterior lies a sensitivity which gains in authenticity by rejecting seductively ostentatious charms, and forms the very core of this musical missionary.
