Beethoven  String quartets op. 18 No. 2, No. 4, No. 6 « Lobkowitz »

The Jerusalem Quartet was founded in 1993 and made a reputation for itself as a major chamber music ensemble after winning several prizes at the Franz Schubert competition in Graz. In recognition of its talent, Daniel Barenboim has lent it the “Sergio Perresson” cello named after a famous 20th century Italian stringed instrument maker, which belonged to Jacqueline Du Pré. The quartet is particularly at home with Classical composers (Haydn, Mozart) and the Romantic period and is now working on the imposing monument of Beethoven’s sixteen quartets, the pinnacle of chamber music repertoire. Dating from circa 1800, the three chosen by the Quartet are the most balanced in terms of clarity of structure and melodic richness. The last quartet is particularly remarkable as its final movement, subtitled “La Malinconia”, has a breadth and beauty steeped in ineffable melancholy.
