Puccini came from a long line of composers of church music, and family tradition paved the way for him to be an organist and Kapellmeister. Puccini eventually excelled in the sphere of opera rather than sacred music. Messa di Gloria, an early work, was never published during the composer’s lifetime. The score, whose themes were reworked by the composer in Edgar and Manon Lescaut, prefigured the style of the major operas which he subsequently composed. However, this mass created for a huge choir proved to be an unexpected success and the musician experimented in it with original and modern perspectives, including a surprisingly lush orchestration. This concert, which is combined with Cappricio Sinfonico, one of the composer’s rare symphonic works, offers a glimpse of the more private and spiritual side of Puccini.
