Zelmira, created in 1822 is the last of the nine opere serie which Rossini wrote for Naples. Like all of the other works by the musician, be they seria or buffa, it is governed by what could be termed the “pleasure principle”, combining a treat for the ears with mastery of technique. In Zelmira, pleasure has the upper hand even in the darkest moments (plots and attempted regicide), and Rossini endows his heroes and traitors alike with the attribute of elegance. The richness of the vocal line, as ever, provides the basis for the psychology (and inevitable seduction) of his characters. Although the celebration of the voices is evident largely in their virtuosity, they are also carried with great subtlety by the orchestral score. Rossini is virtually without peer as the master of an infinite succession of pleasurable moments.
