Ravel’s lyric fantasy, based on a libretto by Colette, has all the characteristics of a work of “educational entertainment”. Punished by his mother because of his reluctance to do his homework, a child has a temper tantrum and breaks everything in sight. Each broken toy, each shattered piece of furniture and every damaged animal comes to life and rebels against the child in an attempt to make him aware of his selfish behaviour. The child’s final act, caring for an injured squirrel, brings him to his senses. The work takes the form of a succession of individual tableaux where various musical forms are mixed together (jazz, foxtrot, ragtime, polka, minuet and waltz). It enabled Ravel to show the diversity of his musical talent and highlights the ever-present onomatopoeia of Colette’s libretto. A forerunner of musical comedy, the work brilliantly illustrates Ravel’s sensitivity and his love of enchantment.

The work is no simply an opera for children. It is above all a reflection on childhood—a time in life when imagination and dreams (both cruel and unusual) are more gripping than reality. For the Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine it will be a case of all hands one deck, as  soloists and choristers, both young and old, will be needed to perform this poetic fantasy. Two special performances (16 March and 1 April) will be scheduled for schoolchildren as well as two performances (16 and 19 March) for the general public.
