Since the end of the 17th century, theatre and music have displayed a distinct taste for the Orient and its fantasized exoticism. Molière’s gentleman was made a Grand Mamamouchi and Mozart created a seraglio worthy of the Arabian Nights. The young Rossini, in turn, painted an imaginary Italian Orient in L’Italiana. Composed after Tancredi, L’Italiana, first performed on 22 May 1813 in Venice, was a resounding success. Rossini renewed with the opera buffa form that had made his reputation several years earlier.

The beautiful Isabelle embarks for Algiers to liberate her lover Lindoro, who has been imprisoned by Mustapha the tyrant. The ship is wrecked and the adventure begins in earnest. There are pirates, eunuchs and all kinds of Turkish delights. The score demands skilful vocal prowess, together with a definite acting capacity. Rossini’s opera is one of the young composer’s most notable successes. Composed in 27 days, this Italiana shows his virtuoso mastery of orchestral and vocal idiom in a whirling sensual work, where oriental folly blows through the opera from beginning to end. To be enjoyed without moderation!
