There is a strong French tradition among cellists – a tradition which is also a school, reputed for an elegance and seriousness which reveals some unusual exponents. Gautier Capuçon is one of the heirs to this tradition. His repertoire reveals a pronounced predilection for the fusion of colours and characteristic idioms, particularly for events such as the premiere of a cello concerto. Philippe Manoury, an associate composer of the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, excites with his shimmering compositions and the interplay of timbres which he elicits from each instrument. His composition will be followed by works by Mozart, inspired by marches and entertainments, forming a frame or daydream which will cast an enthralling light on his Cello Concerto.
