A bright interlude, as violinist Viktoria Mullova delivers Sibelius's lyrical concerto with flair, flanked by two Schubert symphonies

Schubert  Unfinished Symphony D. 759
Sibelius  Violin Concerto op. 47
Schubert  Symphony No. 4 D. 417 « Tragic »

The works featured in this concert fuse extremely diverse compositional styles and aesthetic schools. Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is tinged with folk colours. The score expresses the nostalgia of a composer who dreamed of a career as a violinist in his youth. It is still romantic and borrows from Nordic folklore. The two symphonies by Schubert, the ‘Unfinished’ and the ‘Tragic’, unite the spirit of dance which he inherited from Haydn, with an admission of utter solitude.
