A delightful interlude as Patricia Petibon dazzles in Britten's Les Illuminations based on poems by Rimbaud

Mozart  Symphony No. 31 K. 297 « Paris »
Britten  Illuminations
Mozart  « Alma grande e nobil core » K. 578, « Fra i pensier », aria from Lucio Silla
« Tiger! Wetze nur die Klauen» aria from Zaïde
Bartók  The Miraculous Mandarin, suite

This concert takes the form of a musical tour of Europe, bringing together the “Paris” symphony and songs from Lucio Silla by the Austrian Mozart, the exceptional Illuminations by the British composer Britten – a musical setting of poems by the French poet Arthur Rimbaud – and the aptly named The Miraculous Mandarin by Hungarian composer Bartók, based on a libretto by his fellow countryman Menyhért Lengye, in order to showcase music in all its diversity and universality. Soprano Patricia Petibon is a great traveller and explorer of diverse repertoires, shifting effortlessly from Baroque repertoire to Mozart, Verdi, Poulenc, and Berg. Her voice epitomises with joy and verve the French spirit of charm and melancholy, with just a dash of her own personal whimsy.
