Sarah Connolly and Robert Dean-Smith celebrate man's communion with nature in Mahler's Song of the Earth

Beethoven  Symphony No.6 « Pastoral »
Mahler  Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)

The Dutch orchestra and its director, the talented Yannick Nézet-Séguin, invite us to discover a bucolic Mahler, as his Song of the Earth cycle echoes Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6. After completing his Eighth Symphony, a superstitious Mahler sought to avoid titling his next symphony No. 9 as no composer, including Beethoven, Schubert and Bruckner, had survived a ninth symphony! This cycle of orchestral lieder was therefore called The Song of the Earth, but it is a true symphonic composition, and the harmony achieved between voice and orchestra make it one of the composer’s most accomplished works.
