Mahler Kindertotenlieder, complete cycle
Symphony No. 1
The first of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra’s two evenings dedicated to Mahler this season features the “Titan” Symphony No. 1 (with its spirited finale heralded by no fewer than 7 horns) and the Kindertotenlieder song cycle. There could be no better choice of baritone than Matthias Goerne, one of the most distinguished standard-bearers of the German Romantic lied tradition, to interpret this cycle of melodies, which are some of the most moving ever composed by Mahler.
