Happiness takes centre stage as Mendelssohn's joyful "Italian" journey introduces Mahler's Symphony No.4 with its child's vision of Heaven
Rossini The Barber of Seville, overture
Mendelssohn Symphonie No. 4 « Italian »
Mahler Symphonie No. 4
This second evening with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra will be devoted to the theme of travel and the senses. The overture of The Barber of Seville will set the tone for an evening devoted to pleasure and lightness featuring Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 – a brilliant and lively work which provides a faithful musical transcription of the landscapes the composer discovered during his stay in Italy – and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, a true ode to the pleasures of the countryside, performed by the wonderful soprano Lucy Crowe.
