Chopin's passionate Piano Concerto No.2 springs from the gifted fingers of Maria-João Pires

Chopin  Piano concerto No. 2 op. 21
Mozart  Symphony No. 41 « Jupiter »

Approximate running Time
1st part: 50mn - Intermission: 20 mn - 2nd part: 35mn

Mozart’s last symphony and the subtlety of Chopin’s writing for piano take centre stage in this evening with Trevor Pinnock and pianist Maria João Pires. The Polish composer’s repertoire for piano is vast, but he only composed two concertos for the instrument, both of which illustrate his genius and personality to the full. A subtle work whose treatment blends melodic poetry and verve, this concerto retains the traditional three movement structure alternating between fast and slow passages. With her slight frame and gentle smile, Maria João Pires is an atypical and endearing performer. She is an exceptional interpreter of Mozart, Schubert, and Chopin, and her reading of the Polish composer’s work respects both the score and its spirit (as her recent CD recordings of the Nocturnes beautifully demonstrate). This will undoubtedly be an unostentatious performance, straight from the heart, but with all the subtlety of a truly “inspired” artist.
