Mozart Piano Concerto No. 9 K. 271 « Jeunehomme »
Tchaïkovski Manfred Symphony op. 58
Approximate running time (intermission included) : 1h50
Concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic, joined by Valery Gergiev, have a distinctive flavour – a blend of tradition and verve. The programme for this new collaboration reflects this fusion and features Mozart’s hugely popular “Jeunehomme” concerto, performed by young Chinese prodigy Yuja Wang, and Tchaikovsky’s Manfred symphony. It is all too commonly assumed that Tchaikovsky’s symphonic works end with the poignant ‘Pathétique’, thus overlooking this last symphony. It was deliberately unnumbered and bears the name of Lord Byron’s eponymous hero. Indeed, the entire score is driven by the suppressed energy of this tragic hero seeking a redemption he will never achieve. This is one of the composer’s most powerful works – goose bumps are guaranteed.
