We thank you for your understanding

Beethoven  Coriolan, overture
Strauss  Death and Transfiguration
Mahler  Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)

This concert is a major first, and is sure to be one of the most popular Parisian evenings of the season, as Italian conductor Daniele Gatti makes his debut visit at the head of the Vienna Philharmonic to Avenue Montaigne, and in the company of star German tenor, Jonas Kaufmann. The icing on the cake is one of the most beautiful programmes imaginable for this orchestra, as the concert presents core elements from its history and repertoire: Beethoven’s heroic and expressive Coriolan, Strauss’s sublime poetic symphony Death and Transfiguration, and Mahler’s The Song of the Earth cycle – the symphony with voice which celebrates the torments and joys of the human soul with a rare expressive force. The might of the orchestra creates the perfect setting for the soloist’s voice – everything is poised in a fragile balance, but it is precisely this fragility that creates the power and humanity of this work, which is one of the composer’s most poignant.
