Countertenor Max Emanuel Cenčić is an eccentric figure on a par with his illustrious predecessor Farinelli, to whose major roles he has introduced us. For this new recital, he has opted to draw on the still relatively unfamiliar school of Neapolitan opera, a lavish and tumultuous period at the dawn of the 18th century when Naples produced a number of composers. They produced hit after hit, populated the courts of Saxony, Vienna, London and Venice, vying for success, stealing librettos, singers and patrons from each other, and changing the course of musical history forever.
From these rare manuscripts, Max Emanuel Cenčić revives excerpts from Poliphème, created by Porpora for the unpredictable Farinelli in the hope of outdoing Handel; Il Tigrane, one of the finest operas by Scarlatti, the founder of the Neapolitan school of opera; and Didon abandonnée, the first opera with a libretto by Metastasio, which reduced the whole of Naples to tears when it was originally performed.
