Monsters, witches and magicians I
Storms, fires, dreams and apparitions by dei ex machina - Baroque theatre had any number of tricks at its disposal to delight composers and audiences enamoured of extravagant effects. These scenes also offered an opportunity to relish defying musical conventions with elements banned from treatises on composition. Moments of madness and delirium still exert a fascination today with their dramatic power and ability to allow free rein to the forces of mystery, magic and the struggle between Good and Evil. From Handel to Purcell, Patricia Petibon and Nahuel di Pierro will explore the fatal curses and dark plots of the great villains of opera ranging from the witch Alcina to the Zoroastro the magician, from the spellbinding Queen of Damascus to the famous Merlin in King Arthur. Emmanuelle Haïm, the conductor of the Concert d'Astrée, will guide the singers with verve and vigour through the labyrinth of these great musical works.
