This evening is devoted to American film, featuring arrangements based on numerous compositions for original film scores. The programme will be introduced and rounded off by two legends of American music – Bernstein and Gershwin, who, in addition to their “screen” careers, are also known for penning a repertoire of great richness and diversity. Although Aaron Copland (1900-1990) is better known as a “traditional” composer  and his overtures are regularly performed to open American touring orchestra concerts, it is less commonly known that he also wrote for the silver screen (Of Mice and Men). Hanns Eisler (1898-1962), a German theoretician and composer affiliated to the Second Viennese School and a friend of Brecht, went into exile in the United States from 1933 to 1948, where he had a successful Hollywood career. Hungarian Miklos Rozsa (1907-1995) carved out a career for himself with the major studios, notably with scores for historical epics (Quo Vadis, Ivanhoe, Ben-Hur, Knights of the Round Table, etc.). Alain Resnais invited him to score the soundtrack for his film Providence. John Williams is Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’s composer of choice and penned world-famous scores for Star Wars, Jaws, E.T. and the Indiana Jones adventures
